A septic system processes waste material and waste water from your home. It's an underground system which has a big tank which is buried on your property. Plumbing runs from your home to the below ground tank, and through those plumbing lines flow the waste water, and materials that may be either flushed, or routed down the drains of your house. The tank was designed to permit the solid material to settle to the bottom while the liquid stays on the top. The liquid is pumped out from the tank into a drain field. The bacteria are filtered out from the liquid by layers of rock and dirt. At some point, the water that is clean is re-absorbed by the ground.
Your septic system has to be maintained for it to work effectively. If it does not work properly, you'll likely find a waste material backup somewhere within your house, around your septic system or around your drain field. Moist and saturated soil over the tank or the drain field can signal problems that, if not addressed promptly, could cost you 100s if not 1000s of dollars to repair or replace your septic system.
